Tarsiers, or locally known as mawmag or mamag. The tarsiers are considered to be the smallest primates in the world. Ans since they are smallest then they are the hardest primate to find. The Bohol tarsiers are endangered and is one of the tourist attraction of Bohol. The Bohol Tarsiers are rare species and being up close and personal with these animals is a truly amazing experience.
Fortunately, the tarsiers are endemic to the Philippines. Tarsiers can be found in the southeastern part of the Philippine archipelago, particularly on the islands of Bohol, Samar, Leyte and in Mindanao. These tarsiers are members of the estimated 45 million year old family of Tarsidae, whose name is derived from it elongated ankle bone or “tarsus”.
Tarsiers are also reported to have been found in Maripipi island, Siargao Island, Basilan and Dinagat Island, although they mat be considered as subspecies.
Tarsiers measures only about 85 to 160 mm in height, making it as one of the smallest primates in the world. The small size makes it difficult to spot. Males can grow to a mass of 80 to 160g ( 2.8 – 5.6 oz. ), while the females are lighter. The average adult is only about the size of a human fist.
Tarsiers are small animals with enormous eyes; each eyeball is approximately 16 mm in diameter and is as large as its entire brain. Their eyes are fixed in its skull, so they cannot move in their sockets. It makes me wonder if they are somewhat related to the famous Java the Hut.But the tarsiers are special, their neck can allow its round head to rate 180° while they wait and observe silently for nutritious preys. Amazing! Their eyes are disproportionately large, having the largest eye-to-body size ratio of all mammals. These huge eyes provide this nocturnal animal with excellent night vision.[9] In bright light, the tarsier’s eyes can constrict until the pupil appears to be only a thin line. In darkness, the pupil can dilate and fill up almost the entire eye. The large membranous ears are mobile, appearing to be almost constantly moving, allowing the tarsier to hear any movement.
The Philippine bohol tarsier has thin, rough fur which is colored gray to dark brown. The narrow tail, usually used for balance, is bald except for a tuft of hair at the end, and is about twice the body length. Its elongated “tarsus”, or ankle bone, which gives the tarsier its name, allows it to jump at least 3 m from tree to tree. Its long digits are tipped with rounded pads that allow them to cling easily to trees and to grip almost any surface. The thumb is not truly opposable, but the first toe is. All of the digits have flattened nails, except for the second and third toes, which have sharp claws specialized for grooming.
