Ash wednesday is one of the most popular and important holy days in the liturgical calendar. Ash wednesday is the first day of Lent and is the season marked by services, prayers, penitence and fasting.
Ash wednesday takes place 46 days before Easter Sunday, and is observed by Catholics, although many otehr Christians do observe it too.
Ash Wednesday comes from the Jewish tradition of penance and fasting. The practice includes the wearing of ashes on the head. The ashes symbolize the dust from which God made us. As the priest applies the ashes to a person’s forehead, he speakes the words: “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
This year ash wednesday falls on another very special occasion “Valentine’s Day”, on the 14th of February 2018.
Valentines Day is a day of celebration of Love feasted with good food ( steaks and bacons ) and red wine. Not to mention the party and romantic dinners. Yet, as it falls on a very holy day for Catholics, it is quite interesting how religious observers would celebrate both in the appropriate essence. I would not say that celebrating valentines with accord to a holy day is wrong but rather we do the celebration in moderation. Love can be celebrated with God in the center of things.
Prayers and dinners can mix well together. As for the food, i would suggest that instead of the meaty steak why not savor the tasty grilled tuna or tanguigue steaks and scallops, since ash Wednesday is for Catholics, a no meat day.
Much better if we could indulge ourselves with the greener and much healthier salads and fruit juices rather than meats and wines. Valentines day means love and love is God so, it can easily be celebrated with lots of prayers and lots of love from your dear ones.
