DILG to conduct compliance audit for the 1,800 establishments in Boracay
Department of the interior and Local Government (DILG) Assistant Secretary Epimaco Densing has commited himself to strongly push to conduct immediately a compliance audit for more or less 1,800 establishments in Boracay Island.
Secretary Epimaco said that “Part of the program that i will be proposing today is we have to have a compliance audit for each establishment on the island. Simply saying you’re compliant and we discover you’re not compliant, so we have to audit all of you.
But Sec. Densing admintted that demolition of any resort and hotel have not been planned yet even if they are found to have no environmental compliance certificate (ECC). Other establishments are even found to be operating without a mayor’s premit.
He said that a deeper inspection is in the offing as some of these establishments are not compliant while the insist that they are.
Sec. Densing said that goverment agencies will create a checklist of all the requirements needed for all establishments to comply while intensive inspection of each firm’s permits from local permits to DENR permits.
An important point in the inspection is to physically chech each of the firms sewerage plants and other environmental facilities.
“On the environment side, many of them do not have an ECC, many of them do not have an environmental impact assessment and to some extent some of them are operating without a mayor’s permit and this is something that we have to look into,” he added.
The Departments of Environment and Natural Resources, Interior and Local Government, and Tourism have reached a concession calling for the closure of Boracay for six months effective April 26.
The recommendation was sealed even after presidential spokesperson Harry Roque did not discount the possibility of having Boracay closed during the lean season and not during the summer breaks or other peak days.
President Duterte had labeled the island as a “cesspool’’.
The declaration prompted the crackdown on establishments and stakeholders on the island for violations of environmental laws and policies.
