Oslob whale shark
Swimming with Oslob whale sharks
Oslob — Every early morning around 6 a.m. already nearly 50 to 100 tourists are gearing up excitedly on the beach at Oslob. They are all expecting to see the largest fish in the world, the Oslob whale shark or “Butanding” — measuring between 18 and 45 feet in length and up to 20 tons in weight. The tourists are grouped by 10’s and are helped onto tiny boats. For just paddling about a few minutes the boatman would start cranking the engine, then cruise for another five until they reach the first cohort of feeders. The boatman then kills the engine, and with great excitement would inform the guests that here we are with the whale sharks. Then you can start getting pictures with the great whale sharks and those who are adventurous enough can snorkel with them. Tourists are provided with life jackets and snorkels for safety.
Encountering the Whale Sharks
At first, you might just see in the water a lumbering dark shadows, then bubbles and then the gentle giants “Oslob Whale Sharks” will appear from below. Then an 18-foot whale shark would appear into view. Its tail alone is the length of my body. Parasitic fishes swarm the shark’s body, feeding off debris on its belly and its giant spotted coat. Their mouths gape wide, filtering vast amounts of water for food in the same way whales do. Docile as dolphins but not nearly as energetic, you will be amaze how the sharks are so friendly and so gentle as it moves slowly in the waters.
